Alma Patty Tzalain, a farm worker Western NY, had this opinion piece published in The New York Times. “I Harvest Your Food, Why Isn’t My Health ‘Essential’?” In it, Alma points out the painful choices farm workers face when they become sick.
“I called my supervisor and let her know what the doctor told me and she said that I should go home. She didn’t say anything about receiving sick pay, and didn’t give me any assurances that I would still have a job when I felt better. Before this crisis, for many farm workers like me, being sick meant choosing between going to work sick, staying home with no pay, or possibly getting fired. We are used to working through sickness.” Read the full article by clicking on the picture. (https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/15/opinion/covid-farmworkers-paid-leave.html?searchResultPosition=1)
